Aims

For this gentleman, a knock to the face during a rugby match resulted in severe fractures to both his upper central incisor teeth. The patient’s goal was to restore his chewing ability without shaving any of the adjacent healthy teeth & to have something which is fixed and non-removable. He was also aware that the other front teeth appeared to be getting shorter over time, this was found to be related to an ongoing previously unrecognised grinding habit.

After a discussion of the various avenues which could be taken, we planned for the extraction of both the fractured central incisor teeth, coinciding with the immediate placement of two individual implants within the same appointment.

Treatment

The surgery was a success, with two sturdy implants placed. This gentleman experienced minimal swelling after the procedure and was able to chew firmer foods after a week, using a temporary denture- shortly after this temporary implant crowns were fitted. The temporary crowns were modified over a period of months to carefully reshape the architecture of his gum in the implant region.

As we shaped the new gum form, we also restored the missing tooth height lost from continued grinding over the years. To do this we used composite bonding additive techniques for his upper canine and lateral incisor teeth.

The final outcome was a success. And the patient will now be wearing a rigid mouth guard for any future sporting activities!
